BRIEF HISTORY

The Air Force Military School, Jos (AFMS) was established on 18 August 1980 by the Nigerian Air Force through establishment order 3/80, with the primary objective of providing a broad based academic and technical education as well as military training to post primary school children so that the training will serve as a good foundation for subsequent service in the Armed Forces of Nigeria and the Nigerian Air Force in particular.

. The institution is an all-boys school and is fully residential. The students of the school are referred to as Junior Airmen (JAM). The JAM trained in the school are free either to enlist into the Nigerian Air Force at the end of their course or to withdraw for other places. The structure of the educational curriculum is designed to reflect the special character of the school. About 80% of the educational experience is devoted to academic subjects while about 20% is assigned to military training.

SPECIFIC OBJECTIVES OF THE SCHOOL
In addition to the above stated broad objective, the school also aims to achieve the following:
a. To provide an increasing number of primary school pupils with the opportunity for education of a higher quality, irrespective of social, religious and ethnic background.

b. To diversify the curriculum to cater for the differences in talents, opportunities and roles possessed by or open to students after their Secondary Schools education.

c.To raise a generation of people who can think for themselves, respect the views and feelings of others, respect the dignity of labor and appreciate those values specified under our broad national aims and live as good citizens.

d.To foster Nigerian unity with an emphasis on the common ties that unite us in our diversity.

The school started with 60 JAM and 20 instructors but over the years the school has grown to a population of 939 JAM and 95 instructors.
